The Children's Bread | Pastor John Greiner
“The Children’s Bread” draws from Matthew 15:21–28, where a Canaanite woman’s persistence and faith moved Jesus to heal her demon-tormented daughter. Despite having no covenant with God, she boldly approached Jesus, worshiped Him, and refused to be offended, even when ignored, dismissed, and likened to a dog. Her understanding that even a “crumb” of God’s power was enough brought her miracle. The message emphasizes that the children’s bread—healing, deliverance, provision, and protection—belongs to every believer in Christ. Just as God’s Word in Jesus’ mouth carried ultimate authority and power, so does God’s Word in the believer’s mouth. By holding fast to faith, refusing offense, and speaking God’s promises, Christians can receive every benefit of their covenant without begging, striving, or fear.
down and pick up our Bibles and lift them up, wave them around, make Jesus glad, the devil mad. Let's say this together Say Heavenly Father, I'm so glad to be here today. I'm eager to hear the Word of God. Fact of the matter is, I'm hungry for the Word, I'm thirsty for the Holy Ghost and I shall be filled today. I'll be filled unto victory. I have victory over everything the devil throws at me. He's under my feet today. In Jesus' name. Amen, you can be seated. Hallelujah. Let's turn in our Bibles, please, to Matthew, chapter 15. And we'll start reading verse 21.
Speaker 1:Then Jesus went from there and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts and cried unto him, saying have mercy on me, o Lord, thou son of David. Have mercy on me, o Lord, thou son of David. My daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him saying Send her away. She cries after us. But he answered and said I'm not sent, but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying Lord, help me. But he answered and said it is not me to take the children's bread. Everybody shout children's bread. It's not right, it's not me to take the children's bread and cast it unto dogs. And she said Truth, lord, truth, lord. Yet the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master's table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her oh woman, great is thy faith, be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. And so today I wanted to share a message entitled the Children's Bread, and I endeavor to feed your faith, because this is a year of milestones. It's going to take faith to receive them, and I love to study how Jesus ministered to people. I always stand amazed and it changed my life.
Speaker 1:When I started, really, it took a lot of words out of my mouth, it took a lot of hoopla out of my ministry. I mean, just, you know he was, he didn't have to use a lot of words and uh, you know, really, jesus didn't pray, he just said things and what he said came to pass. And, uh, I want you to remember that you know God's word in your mouth will do the same thing as God's word in his mouth and God's word in Jesus' mouth It'll do the same thing. But here, in this account, we see faith in action from one woman who is without a covenant. She's from Canaan. Another gospel called her Syrophoenician woman. She doesn't have a covenant with God, she's a Gentile. And yet she came declaring her faith in Jesus, thou son of David. She's saying you're the Jews, messiah she's. She's putting it out there.
Speaker 1:A lot of Jews didn't have that revelation. Here's this woman who's not under, you know, judaism. She's not under the Bible, so to speak. No telling really what she used to believe, but somehow somewhere she heard about Jesus and she knew he's the Messiah and she needed help because her daughter is grievously vexed with a demon. We don't know what the symptoms were. Maybe it was something like seizures, convulsions, maybe it was a severe mental state. Maybe it was a severe mental state, maybe she was having, quote unquote a mental breakdown, nervous breakdown. We don't know what it was, but it was bad, and bad enough for this woman by herself which is dangerous in Jesus' day and women just didn't have the rights that they have today and for a woman to travel by herself, much less a woman that's not even Jewish to come into the Jewish quarter and to come up to the Jewish Messiah and begin to make a demand. Well, you know, that's not exactly. I mean, she just was that desperate and of course he answered her not a word. You know, when I read my Bible I see a lot of these situations.
Speaker 1:You know, just Wednesday night I preached on when Jesus marveled. We talked about the Roman centurion. Jesus marveled when he heard the centurion says oh Lord, you don't have to come under my roof, but just speak the word only and my servant will be healed. I'm a man under authority. I recognize authority. I mean, I have total faith in the authority of your word. All you got to do is speak it and I'm gone. And he marveled. He said I haven't found so great a faith, no doubt in Israel, of course. Another time he marveled was at his own hometown. He marveled at their unbelief in the negative. He marveled in the negative. It doesn't say he marveled here, but he said oh woman, great is thy faith. That just delights me when I hear that, because Jesus was always looking for faith, no matter where he was, and he was always measuring.
Speaker 1:It Must be pretty important and I want to keep preaching along these lines. I want to build your faith. Your faith is at one level but it can come up to the next level. I mean your, your faith can, can, can increase. In fact, your faith should increase. You should have more confidence, not less confidence, because God wants to do some great things this year, not just normal things, everyday things. He wants to do great things, milestone things, but it's going to take our faith cooperating. And so I think I look in my Bible.
Speaker 1:I you know the widow at Seraphath. She was a, she wasn't, she wasn't a Jew, and yet God sent Elijah to her house. I've, I've, commanded a widow, woman, to feed you there. When the brook dried up, he ran out of water. You know, the Ravens were feeding him bread and flesh twice a day, sloppy Joe's twice a day. How do you know it was sloppy? I don't know if it was, but it sounds good. I think something that a raven caught I would want. I mean I'm not sure what it would be like, I'm not sure what kind of food that would be roadkill or what, but had to be kosher for Elijah the prophet, and he drank from the brook. Well, when the brook started drying up, it starts getting soupy, it starts getting muddy, it starts getting nasty, and I mean I don't know how long he put up with that, but one day it got so bad that God said okay, you can move from here, go over to Zarephath. I've commanded a widow woman to feed you there.
Speaker 1:And I'm sure he thought about a rich woman when she wasn't rich. She's poor, fixing her last meal, she's going to fix her last meal and uh, and then she's going to kill her son and commit suicide just to spare both of them the pain of starving to death. Well, it doesn't say that in the Bible. I know it, but it implies it. Whoever heard of starving to death? After you just got through eating your last meal, you got another long time to go yet then after that. So no, she was, she was going to do the, she was desperate, and God rescued that woman by sending her the prophet Elijah and he said yeah, okay, go ahead, just fix your last meal, but bake me a little cake first. And then he prophesied and it saved her life and her son's life, and they both ate for a whole year off of that miracle. She's not a Jew.
Speaker 1:Think about Nahum and the Syrian Nahum and the leper. He was a leper, he was chief of staff of the Syrian army, very important man, but he had leprosy and he comes, he goes to Elisha the prophet, and he gets healed. He's not even a Jew. So Jesus started on the day that he came out as the Messiah. Luke, chapter four, verse 18, the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he's anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor five groups of people. And then they didn't like that. They didn't like him saying that, and then he started preaching a five-point message. He only got two points out the widow at Zarephath and Naaman the leper. Those were the first two points of a five-point message of scriptural evidences that non-covenant people got help from God. And why don't you Jews wake up and see? That's the message is? I mean, if these non-covenant people can get this and you, here you are, you've got the covenant with Almighty God and you're letting all this stuff go by you. They got so mad at him they wanted to throw him off the brow of the hill.
Speaker 1:So when I think about what Jesus when he was on the earth, he was always looking for faith. He's always measuring faith. And, uh, you know, he didn't even answer her at first, didn't give her, just gave her the cold shoulder. Just makes you go. Wow, that's amazing. But she didn't give up. She went to his disciples. She would not be denied. She went to the disciples, okay, said Lord, get rid of her. She's bothering us, she's messing with us. I'm going to tell you that's a woman that is at see.
Speaker 1:Faith doesn't quit. Faith doesn't stop at the bad report. Faith doesn't stop when it looks like everything is just not happening for you. No, no, faith just keeps on going. Anybody can quit. No, no, faith just keeps on going. Anybody can quit. Doesn't take any faith to quit, but it takes faith to press in and to keep going and not get offended. She wouldn't get offended. She didn't get offended when Jesus didn't answer her. She didn't get offended when the disciples couldn't help her or wouldn't help her. And then she goes back to Jesus. Let's look at it again. She went back to Jesus and she came verse 25, she came and worshiped him.
Speaker 1:I tell you, when you worship God, the power of God starts turning on. I'm talking about things start to change, the atmosphere starts to change when you begin to worship God. Yeah, we need to thank God, there's no question about it. But we need to thank God so long that it just turns into worship. You know, thanking God is thanking God for what he's done. But when you worship him you forget about what he's done and you start to think about who he is and you worship him for who he is. You just get over into his, into that other place. See, that's what we do here at Glorious Way. We start off by praising God, but by the end, man, we're just worshiping God for who he is. He's a faithful God, he's El Shaddai, he's the God who's more than enough. Hallelujah, he's more than enough.
Speaker 1:So that word worship is a curious word. When you look it up, it's like a dog licking his master. And just think about if you've got a dog. You know I don't have, I don't have a. I have a grand dog, but I don't have a dog. And when I see my, my only grand dog, he licks me. And when he licks me, I'll give him anything. You know, I'll mess with him, I'll pet him, I'll scratch him on the belly, I'll do whatever it takes, even though his breath is a little bit stinky, or sometimes he's a little stinky. But you overlook all that when when your dog licks you or when your cat licks you. I'm not a cat person and they have rough tongues, as I recall, so they're kind of icky when they lick you, they kind of. But you know that's the worship.
Speaker 1:She came and she worshiped him. In the midst of him, denying to help her. She said help Lord, thou son of David. Answered her not a word. Then she comes back and worships him.
Speaker 1:Worship, everybody, say worship the Lord, saying Lord, help me, help me, just help me. How many need help this morning? I mean, you know you come to the right place because the helper's here. So then Jesus said this it just, it just kind of blows your cork. He said you know, cause? He'd already said look, I'm not sent to the Gentile, I'm sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. That's my purpose. I'm not, I'm not looking for the Gentiles, I'm not here to minister to them, I'm here to minister to Jewish people. And so he answered and she said Lord, help me.
Speaker 1:She's worshiping, she's licking on him, not literally, but I mean you know that's the, that the word there is like a dog licking his master. And he said he brought that up. So he knew what worship was, he knew the, he knew the concordance. He said you know, it's not right, it's not me to take the children's bread and cast it to dogs. Called her a dog, most people would have got up in a huff and left, but not this woman.
Speaker 1:Not this woman full of faith, full of great faith. Great faith never gets offended. Great faith never blames God. Great faith never, never, never Says God. You missed it this time, god, how come you hadn't noticed me this time? I mean, no, great faith never blames God, never gets offended.
Speaker 1:And she said truth, lord. You got that right. That's right. I agree, it's not right to cast the children's bread under dogs. But even the little puppies that word dogs really means puppy. And so she said even the little puppies eat of the crumbs of the master's table. That's what I've noticed about my grand dog. My grand dog is always under the table, ready to eat whatever drops off of there. He's trained not to jump up on the table and grab it for himself, but he's so patient, you know, and he's just looking at you, looking at you. How can you not give him something? You got to give him something. She said truth, lord. But even the puppies eat from the crumbs of the master's table.
Speaker 1:See, her faith is saying Jesus, I don't need a loaf of bread. In fact, I don't even need a bite off that loaf of bread. All I need is a crumb. You're not going to miss a crumb, are you? I mean, just a crumb falling off the corner of your mouth is all I need to get the devil off of my daughter's case. All I need is a crumb to get my healing of cancer. All I need is a crumb, and you know a crumb. You never miss a crumb. A crumb is wasted Crumb just goes off and is swept up and thrown out. Clean the table off. Some of the crumbs fall on the floor. Now you know Rudder's going to lick that crumb off the floor if he's standing there, but a lot of crumbs are wasted. I mean, nobody got shorted. Nobody felt like, oh man, we're missing part of our loaf of bread. No, you don't miss any of it. There's plenty for the next person. There's plenty of bread left for everybody that needs a bite. There's plenty of bread left. It doesn't diminish the other needs that are around the table.
Speaker 1:Listen to what she already figured out that most of the Jews had. Most of the people Jesus is preaching to hadn't got that kind of revelation of his word and of his love. Here is this woman comes out from nowhere, driven by the need of her child and would not be denied, and came up with such a magnificent revelation that he said, oh, woman greatest, I say I don't know. It looks like he was. You know, it looks like he marveled.
Speaker 1:Now, the writers didn't say that marvel doesn't appear there, but it sure looks like marvel. But how many of you want to marvel? Jesus Say. I want to marvel the father, I want to have my faith working where he says man, look at that band, look at Stan, look at that faith. God, glory to God, father. Did you see, did you see that level of faith stands, exhibit man that is so powerful. Wow, glory to God. This is worth everything. It's worth everything I went through. It's worth everything I went through. Did you know? He went through some things for us. He went through death, hell and the graves to give us this kind of faith. It's up to us to grow it. Though I said it's up to us to grow it. Though I said it's up to us to grow it, her faith was based on revelation that the word is number one ultimate authority, and number two ultimate power.
Speaker 1:And number three, it doesn't ever run out, never runs out. God's power never runs out, god's healing power, god's delivering power. I mean the bread never goes away, we've got enough bread. I mean think about all the miracles that Jesus worked with bread. I mean he broke. The bread never goes away, we've got enough bread. I mean you think, think about all the miracles that Jesus worked with bread. I mean he, he broke the bread and multiplied the bread and the fishes fed 5,000, five loaves and two fish, which is basically a little boy's lunch. And then another time after that, four loaves and several fish we don't know how many fed 4,000. When he broke the bread on the road to, you know, on the road there to after the resurrection, the two disciples, and they pulled aside into the city and they sat down and when he broke the bread, he just they realized who he was. When he broke the bread and he disappeared, I mean he said I'm the bread of life. Oh, I tell you what.
Speaker 1:So so he's talking about it's not right to cast the children's bread unto the dogs. Well, what, what, what did she need? Well, she needed deliverance for her, her daughter. We don't know exactly what all that meant, but we do know that when he released her. He said you know, uh, you know, have it your way. You know, he, he, he just said be it under the even as you will. And then and the Bible says, and she was made whole, say she didn't just get delivered, she was what made whole. She was restored back like normal before, before the devil attacked her.
Speaker 1:Are y'all with me now talking about the children's bread? What a revelation of God's word. And if you're going to have what everything God has in store for you in this milestone year, you're going to have to kick up your respect and know what you say about things makes all the difference. When you have a word, you have ultimate authority over every hindering spirit. When you have a word, you have ultimate power over everything that's trying to stop you. One word from God, that's all you need. You have enough. It never runs out. It will do the trick. It will do the job. One word from God will do the job. It won't stop. He said you know my word. It always accomplishes what I please. Isaiah 55. It prospers in the thing where to I sin. Well, his word in your mouth will do the same thing. Glory to god.
Speaker 1:Talking about the children's bread. So, um, so her, her, her faith, or great, he called it great faith and what were the results? She got what she desired. Be it unto you as you will, just that simple. He didn't go into a long details, as you will.
Speaker 1:And then we found out her daughter was made whole. I don't know if she was asking for that, she just said help. That's all she said. She wasn't specific. She didn't say I want you to do this, do that and do the other. You know, the doctor said this, the doctor said the other and she's got this. So here's the diagnosis, here's the prognosis. And no, she didn't go, she just said help me. I mean, sometimes we get so diverted into what the doctor said and what the report is and we forget that God doesn't need all that. He already knows it and all we need is his help. And he knows how to help you better than you know how to help you. Don't tell God how to do it. Don't tell God how to do it. Well, you know, but he did it this way last time. Well, he might want to do it different this time. And so her daughter was made whole. And, by the way, lady, great is thy faith. I mean, great is thy faith. What a compliment. What a compliment.
Speaker 1:And notice Jesus didn't pray. He didn't pray for the girl, he didn't pray for her. Heavenly Father, I pray for this child. Thou knowest all the suffering, thou knowest. No, he didn't do any of that. He just said have it your way, just like Whataburger, just like you like it. Just have it. Have it just like you like it, like Whataburger. That's all he said. He didn't go into detail, he didn't cast a deal. Now, there are times when he would cast the devil out, but he did. She said that her daughter was grievously vexed and he didn't cast the devil out. All she said was help. And he just yeah, as you will have it like you want it, go your way. It's yeah, as you will have it like you want it, go your way, have it like you want it.
Speaker 1:I learned so much about watching Jesus in the Gospels, how he ministered to people. It transformed how I approach a lot of things. A lot of times I'll hear a bad report and I say, well, it's not as bad as it looks. I don't get involved in the whole thing. I don't get it. You know what's every little line of the doctor's word. What's the MRI.
Speaker 1:Sometimes we know so much about the sickness we don't know enough about the word. Let's know something about this word. We don't need to be doctors to get people ill. Glory to God. He didn't pray, he didn't speak to the demon, he just said look, it's just like Whataburger, like you like it, just have it like.
Speaker 1:All of us, christians are all heirs of God. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we're heirs. Everything the Old Testament had for the Jews we have, plus Hebrews 8, 6,. We have a better covenant found upon better promises. I mean, if children's bread was for the Jews, then how much more is for every Christian?
Speaker 1:And we know the children's bread includes deliverance, because that's what this woman needed. But we don't know all about what she needed. She might've needed healing. Many times healing and deliverance are together. Many times there are sicknesses and there are infirmities that are directly caused. They're all indirectly, at least indirectly, caused by the devil. But sometimes there are specific demon powers that have to be addressed. And so you, you know children's bread is healing.
Speaker 1:Children's bread is, is deliverance. The children's bread is protection. Psalm 91 is is for the Jews. Well, psalm 91 is for the Christian, he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty. I'll not fear. We will not fear Angels bear us up in their hands, lest we dash our foot against a stone. Let's look at Ephesians, chapter 2. I'm encouraging you today, whatever it is that you have need of. We have a covenant with God. We've got a loaf of wonderful bread that's ours. It's the children's bread. It includes everything Jesus bought and paid for. It's available to us. We don't have to bow and scrape, we don't have to beg. We don't have to have a.
Speaker 1:You know 40 days of fasting. I still hear you know a lot of you know. I've been in India a number of times and a lot of them. One of their favorite things in the church there is fasting for fasting for their healing. Well, you don't have to fast for your healing. You can fast, but don't be fasting for a benefit that's already got. You already have. It's yours, it's been bought and paid for. There's no fasting for that. You're trying to earn it again. Is that what you're trying to do? Really? That's, that's an affront. That's telling jesus what you did. It's not good enough. I need to fast. I need to give up food for 40 days. I mean I've, I've, I've heard it with my own ears people just bragging and they, you know, they're all you can tell they've been doing something wrong because they look miserable. I double dog. Dare you to fast for 40 days and look normal? No, I mean there's a reason to fast, but it's not to get peeled, it's not to get delivered. You fast to draw near to God. I can fast for, sometimes up to 15, 20 minutes. I mean, those days are gone. I can fast Now. I really do fast. I'm intermittent fasting, so I have to do fast, all right, but not for spiritual reasons, all right.
Speaker 1:Ephesians, chapter two, verse 12. This is, this, is what we were before we got saved. This is what this, this woman was that came to Jesus from Canaanite. This Canaanite woman that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the Commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. That's her position. That was our position before we got saved. Looks hopeless, doesn't it? I said it looks hopeless, doesn't it? That's the state of every unsaved person on the planet right now. That was her state.
Speaker 1:See, god sees three groups of people on the earth the Jews, the nations, which is, the uncoveted ones, the Gentiles, so to speak, the goyim, the Jews, the goyim and the church. I say and I believe I'm right, you can argue with me if you want to I believe that Americans are a fourth group because we have a covenant with God, like Israel did, and this nation was founded upon that covenant. Now, it's not as good a covenant as the church. You can be an American and not be a Christian, and then you don't have that same covenant. We've got the best deal going. Christians have born again Christians. I mean, we're going to see who we are, but I'm telling you, god deals with Americans different than he does France and Germany and the EU and Russia and all the rest of them. We're separate and we're beginning to see America rise to the top that God had. I mean, I believe he had a God. God had America in his vest pocket. We're not mentioned particularly in the Bible, but I believe God had in mind this nation all along. He needed somebody to take the lead and we're finally doing that.
Speaker 1:Ephesians 13 now, but now in Christ Jesus. This describes us now. Now in Christ Jesus, you who were sometimes far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. See, now we're near to him. See, we were far away from him. Now we're near to him. In fact, we're one with him, in fact in verse 19,. Now, therefore, you're no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God. We've been invited into the household, we've been named with his name, we're part of the household. Now we're not out here alone and without hope in the world. Glory to God. So there's no begging, there's no whining. We don't have to sit here and fast for healing. We don't have to beg for deliverance. We don't have to say, oh God, I've got a big tax bill coming up and I don't have the money. Oh God, no, we don't have to beg. You know that's part of the loaf of bread we've got. You know, financial and material provision comes in the bread that he baked for us.
Speaker 1:There was a time when my dad got on this bread baking kick. I don't know really why he did. Somehow, one day he just woke up and decided he was going to be a bread maker and he's got this sourdough starter and he started making bread and he would make bread several times a week. And I mean, you know I'd come in the house, you know, and men smell that bread. Oh, that would keep me home. I would normally try to get in the car and leave and go somewhere. You know, teenagers you try to go someplace else. But no, I hung around for the bread to come out of the oven.
Speaker 1:There's nothing like bread coming out of the oven. It's nothing like Mrs Baird's bread. Except I worked at Mrs Baird's bakery and that smelled pretty good up there on that roof when I that summer I was up there on the roof working on the place there and here in town. But anyway, he'd bring it out of the oven, he'd get a whole stick of butter and he'd run that butter over the crust, you know, and just get it all dripped with butter. And then he'd slice it and have a big old one-inch slice and I'd wait, somebody else would get the heel. Let me have the other part, let me have the next slice in and get me some more butter. You could make a meal, just, I mean just, oh, it was so good, but two days later you threw it out because it's stale Modern bread.
Speaker 1:They've got all these preservatives in there, they've got all these chemicals and it kind of stays the same for about three weeks. You know that can't be good. Something in you should there ought to be an alarm. Go off and say, uh, this is not natural and it's not supernatural either. This is bad. And then it starts turning green. Don't scrape the green off and eat the bread, please. No, I mean, it has to be consumed right now. That's why they kept bread going in the temple. They had the show bread all the time. It's fresh. Only for a short time it has to be consumed because it gets kind of stale. Listen, we've got a fresh. We've got fresh bread. All the time we have fresh bread.
Speaker 1:When we come into his presence and we pray and we worship him and we love on him, I'm telling you he's baked us a bread. He's got something that's going to really meet the need, whatever that need is. I don't want to get anything out of this. There's no begging, there's no whining, there's no just you just act like the Bible's true. She used to act like it just all belongs to you.
Speaker 1:This lady was so bold. She knew she didn't deserve it, she knew she didn't have that covenant, but yet something impelled her. What she heard about Jesus, how Jesus healed them all. She must have heard something. You know about all the people that he healed. She heard something. She came to him. Well, thank God, we don't have to come to him. He's in us through the person of the Holy Ghost. I mean, we just need to remind ourselves. He's on the inside of us. He's baking something all the time. It's your bread, it's healing, it's deliverance, it's protection, it's provision, both materially and financially. Every bit of it is the children's bread. So remember, god's word in your mouth is just as powerful as God's word is in his mouth and just as powerful as Jesus' word in his mouth. Begin to release your faith, begin to stir your faith up and speak to your mountain, speak to your problem and claim the children's bread. Come on, lift your hands and receive right now, hallelujah, the children's bread. Everybody say the children's bread. It belongs to me. Hallelujah, come on, let's rejoice this morning.
